FAQs

What are these electric bikes all about?

So you may be asking yourself, what is the point of an electric bike? The simple answer is that eBikes are the next evolution in cycling. eBikes take all the practicality of a traditional bicycle and allow it to go much further and much faster. All this is done while adding a few technological perks that opens up a door of possibilities for people that want more fun and adventure, people that want exercise but want to shorten their commute, and people that struggle or experience pain when riding. A common misconception by die hard cyclists is that an electric bike is "cheating". However, more and more cyclists, enthusiasts, and even casual bikers are being converted each day. Just as the 10 and 20 speed became the next evolution in cycling years ago, the electric assist is the next big leap into the future.

Firstly, an electric bike is considered and used as a bicycle, not a motorcycle. Riding an electric bike feels nothing like riding a motorcycle.

It’s important to understand that an electric bike functions just like a regular bike. Except for a few electrical components an electric bike uses most of the same components of a normal bike.

An electric bike is meant to support the rider, not take on the whole job. Riding is easier as the electric bike helps you take on the challenges of hills and headwinds so you can ride further without feeling tired.

How to choose the bike that’s right for you?

To have a comfortable ride on a bike, of course high quality components are important whether you are riding an electric bike or a regular bike. But on an electric bike you also need to consider the motor, the battery and the controller.

The motor

The legal limit for an electric bike motor in New Zealand is 300w. A higher wattage means more pulling power but more drain on the battery.

The other factor to consider when you are looking at purchasing an electric bike is the location of the motor.

Most electric bikes on the market have what is known as a hub motor. These motors are integrated into either the front or back wheel either pushing or pulling the wheels along. The main disadvantage to this hub system is that as it is not connected to the bikes’ gears so it loses efficiency on hills and more challenging terrain.

olivenz e-Bikes offer either front/rear motor hubs as well a mid – drive motor which works together with the crank and the gears. This system has a number of advantages

  • Increased performance using less battery power as the mid – drive motor uses the bikes existing gears
  • Superior hill climbing power as you can change gears depending on the incline
  • As the motor is positioned closer to the ground keeping the weight central and low, handling of the bike is improved

The battery

The only choice really for an electric bike battery is the lithium ion battery. Lead acid batteries have been used in the past but are quite heavy and bulky, have a limited riding range and a life span of 100 – 300 charges.

The Samsung lithium battery used on olivenz e-Bikes has the following features:

  • A light weight, 36v 14Ah high capacity battery
  • Up to 60 kms riding range in pedal – assist mode (30kms on throttle only)
  • A life span of approximately 800 charges or 3 years of virtually daily use

Do I need a license for an electric bike?

Electric bikes are classed as regular bicycles in New Zealand as long as they meet the following 2 conditions :

  • Top Speed in “electric only” is 32 km per hour
  • Motor power must be no more than 300w

olivenz - eBikes comply with both of these regulation requirements.

Can I lose weight with an electric bike?

Absolutely! Electric biking is more fun and less intimidating, which drastically increasing the likelihood of getting out to seize the day! Electric bikes will handle enormous amounts of weight and can be an excellent way to get moving from a sedentary lifestyle.

Are electric bikes cheap to operate?

Yes, very cheap. No fossil fuels required to drive these e-Bikes - just your energy!

What is the carbon footprint of an eBike?

Based on electricity use; at least 10 times better than an electric car. How far can you go on a single charge? olivenz e-Bikes will go 30 kilometres on a charge by just using the throttle and the electric alone. If you decide to pedal or you use the electric occasionally you will go even further. This of course depends on the rider's weight and the terrain but a good rule of thumb is at least 32 kilometers.

How long do they take to charge?

From 0 to 100% in around 4 hours. Usually the battery will reach 80% in around an hour and a half and the rest of the time is trickle charge to get your distance.
